Is There a Way to Prevent My Dryer from Shrinking Clothes?

Your dryer has been a life-saver and time-saver in many circumstances, but when you’re not careful about what you’re throwing in, you might find that you’ve just shrunk one of your most beloved clothing items. Why Are Your Clothes Shrinking?
According to Fred’s Appliance, “Dryers use a combination of heat and rotation to remove moisture content. Different materials react in different ways to heat, but most fabric textiles shrink when exposed to high temperatures. As the dryer tosses around a load of clothes in a hot, enclosed area, it forces the fibers to gradually constrict; thus, resulting in shrunken garments.” Of course, you can always count on some materials to never shrink and others to always shrink. Materials that are more likely to shrink are listed as follows:
- Wool
- 100%, or high percentage cotton
- Linen
- Silk
No matter what, it’s always best to double-check the care instructions label. If the tag says, “hang dry,” never put it in your dryer. If the label says “tumble on low,” constantly adjust the heat settings on your dryer.
Preventing Shrinking Clothes
The only one-hundred percent proven way to ensure that your clothes don’t shrink in the dryer is not to use the dryer. But we know that that’s not always an option, so here are two ways you can dramatically reduce the chances of shrinking clothes in the dryer.
1.Use the Lowest Heat Setting
The less heat that’s used in the dryer means there is less chance of shrinkage. Just be aware that most dryers will automatically revert to medium or high heat, so you’ll have to set this option every time. If you have a newer dryer, you can also opt for the “air dry” option, which will dry your clothes by tumbling only.
2.Take Your Clothes out Before They Fully Dry
If you’re in a bit of a rush and don’t have time to completely air dry your clothes, you can toss them in the dryer and remove them before they are thoroughly dried (about 10-15 minutes before the dryer finishes the load). Doing this can speed up the drying process but reduce the chances of over-drying and prevent more shrinking.
